Senator proposes, then withdrawals bill tying welfare benefits to student academic performance

Came across this and found it to be interesting. Senator Stacey Campfield proposed a bill to tie welfare benefits to students academic performance. Although the bill was ultimately withdrawn the implications of such a bill are problematic on many different levels as it specifically targets economically disadvantaged students, further stratifying those who have the means, resources, or capital from those who do not. Thoughts?

  1. Interesting article, Edmund. From my point of view, the Tennessee legislator is definitely looking at the problem from a very privileged viewpoint. He, and other elites, can take time off of work to volunteer at their children's schools as well as attend field trips and the parent-teacher conferences that he requires. Other parents cannot afford to take time off from their jobs and work multiple jobs which force them to be away from the home for long stretches of time.

Further, this continues to stratifies low-income people so that they encounter more barriers to impede their social mobility.
