Policies for Transgendered Students

Here is an interesting article on institutional policies for transgendered students, particularly at women’s colleges. Some colleges have specific policies reassuring their students that, once admitted, they will be allowed to graduate as long as they meet the requirements, regardless of a change in gender. The article raises questions about the intersection of gender-specific college goals and inclusiveness in higher education.

  1. This is really interesting and timely - thanks for posting it, Carrie!

My thoughts are in reference to this statement by University spokesperson Melton:

"When asked why the word “transgender” wasn’t used in the letter, Melton said, “Does it need to be?”"

My answer to Ms. Melton is a resounding YES! Not only do we need to exactly state what is covered in a policy (or plan as the case may be) so we can ensure that all aspects of diversity are covered, we also need to ensure that transgendered students know that they are protected. Could you imagine having a policy for equal rights that do not have the wording regarding a persons race or ethnicity or gender? This should extend to a persons gender identification as well.

    1. Thanks ladies...I want everyone to feel included all of the time. Sometimes the route to inclusivity seems so boggled down by words because politics tends to be dirty...when we talk about equality, we mean for everyone. When politicians say it...they ask for whom?
      Ahhhhhh....
